    On 15 January, a community television station in Jatiwangi, West Java, Indonesia broadcast 10 Tactics. The station is run by the multimedia department of the Jatiwangi Art Factory (JaF),a nonprofit organization that focuses on the study of local rural life through art and cultural events such as festivals, performances, visual art, music, video, ceramics, exhibitions, artist residencies, monthly discussions, radio broadcasts and education.

    Now two years after 10 Tactics was launched, the film has just been presented at Warsaw's international human rights documentary film festival, Watch Docs. We screened the film and presented our work on Info-Activism on the last day of the festival, dedicated to "New Technologies and Social Change" alongside workshops on digital security by Frontline Human Rights Defenders and on social media activism by People in Need, Prague.

    Luis Carlos is a video fanatic that for the past few years has built a video screening web site called Habitación de Henry Spencer. He records every day videos about people and situations capturing many social moments in the city of Lima, Peru. With a wide range of topics recorded on video, La Habitación de Henry Spencer has made a large audience for itself attracted by in-house entertainment clips, witness shots on daily happenings in the city, interviews to interesting people and citizen journalism.

    Soon after its release, the 10 Tactics Burmese film was picked up by the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) and highlighted on their science and technology program, khit hlaine yin pyin, whose title translates to "wave of new era". The bi-weekly program, directed by than win htut, will be showing the entire 10 Tactics film in weekly installments, along with some segments of Survival in the Digital Age, Tactical Tech's animation series about digital security and privacy for activists.

    Twitter use in Mexico has rapidly grown in urban areas since late 2009 alongide the increasing ownership of smartphones. With this, the number of online conversations, opening up new discussions and activities, has also risen.

    In late 2007, a group of young Chileans visited Punta de Choros, one of Chile's natural wonders and home to 80% of the world's Humbolt penguins and over 800 other species. As the group walked through the small town, they noticed a paper on a wall that advertised the plans to building four coal thermoelectric plants in the region, which would threaten the fragile eco-system.

    VotoJoven is an Venezuelan youth movement that aims to promote civic and democratic engagement among the youngest voters. During 2010, VotoJoven worked on voting related topics, starting from increasing voter registration rates, voting promotion and elections monitoring. With a vibrant and creative discourse, VotoJoven managed to combine on and offline campaigns to reach un-registered young Venezuelan voters.

    Over the last four years, Chile has struggled to reform an outdated intellectual property law. Originally passed in 1970, the law exlcuded libraries and most importantly, digital material as well. A new act was proposed, act 17.336, to reform and update the outdated law. While everyone seemed to agree that the law needed to be updated, special interests and media companies fought to protect their own financial interests by advoacting that changes should be minimal.

Many of these subsidies however, have been diverted and much of it goes into hands that the subsidies were not intended for.     Burmese and Spanish are the two latest languages to join 10 Tactics’ website in a fully functional and translated form. The 10 Tactics project was launched in December 2009. Since this time hundreds of rights advocates from around the world have used these materials to deliver workshops for turning information into action and they have screened the 10 Tactics film to get people talking about opportunities and barriers for info-activism.

    Many project have tackled sexual harassment in our communities through education and action. One of the major challenges with sexual harassment and tracking is the difficulty of collecting accurate data. A lack of reporting can provide limited numbers and make the problem seem smaller than it is.

    After a screening of 10 Tactics at the University of Yucatan in Merida, Mexico, was cancelled at the last minute, IEPAAC (The Self-Managed Popular Research and Education Organisation) offered to host the viewing at its office. Since then, the organisation, which advocates for children’s rights and disaster management, has screened 10 Tactics again twice to local civil society organisations.

    Should children only be the consumers of information? Should they not also have a voice to be able to tell stories from their own perspectives? These were some of the questions that encouraged a partnership between UNICEF and the Department of Communication, University of Hyderabad to launch CAMP, or Children as Media Producers, a participatory video initiative that took place in the Medak district of Andhra Pradesh, India.

    Just six months after helping host the first screening in Mexico City of Tactical Tech's 10 Tactics video, the Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez Human Rights Centre (Centro Prodh) in Mexico has gone from having an old-fashioned, out-dated and rudimentary website, to producing podcasts, YouTube videos, video conferences and maintaining not just a website, but also a Facebook page and three Twitter feeds.

    Linda Raftree, stumbled upon the 10 Tactics materials quite by chance.

    Raftree was at a “tweetup” [a gathering of friends on a social network who organize via Twitter a face-to-face meeting] while passing through Amsterdam when she was given a copy of the 10 Tactics toolkit. She took it back to her hotel, watched the video, and immediately decided to use it in an upcoming training workshop in Kenya.

    In February 2010, the House of Digital Culture screened the 10 Tactics film for about 100 people in São Paulo, Brazil. The event was more than just a screening of the film; it was also a fundraiser for local activist organisations.  The House of Digital Culture in Brazil is a cluster of individuals and organisations formed to promote the ability of people to communicate using digital tools.

    The first thing that impressed the Cyprus Community Media Centre about the 10 Tactics material was the way it presented different ways of using common tools to achieve a greater impact, said Beran Djemal, their Outreach Officer for the Turkish Cypriot community. “It’s not like we will have to gain lots more new skills, or we have to spend lots of hours learning new skills,” she said. “It’s simple.” Plus, she added, using new tactics and tools doesn’t require a large budget. “That’s very important for activism, because otherwise you’re limiting your influence.

    REDDES and the Peruvia technology and education open project Escuelab joined forces to host an info-activism day in Lima, Peru. Peruvian activists and NGO personnel arrived at Escuelab for a day training with Juan Manuel Casanueva and Victor Hernandez. The info-activism training included the screening of 10  Tactics and specialised info-activism training sessions on message visualisation, social media, video activism and info-activism strategies.

    Human rights advocates, technology activists and NGOs gathered in Nicaragua for an info-activism day which included a screening of 10 Tactics.  The day was promoted by REDDES and hosted by ISI, a technology education and promotion institution in Managua, Nicaragua. The day included a screening of 10 Tactics, a four hour workshop on info-activism using internet-based platforms, a two hour workshop on audio and video production, and a two hour workshop on internet security.

    When we send people copies of our toolkits and guides, we follow up asking them to complete an online evaluation. To thank people for their feedback we periodically give out a prize based on the questionnaire response judged most intriguing/interesting/critical by a review panel at Tactical Tech.     10 Tactics was included in the annual Human Rights Fair in Mexico City which took place over the first weekend of December in the city's main plaza, the Zócalo. Under the slogan “It's your city … live it. It's your right”, over 80 organisations executed a wide variety of activities involving human rights awareness, education, information rallies and entertainment.

    Since 2007, Tactical Technology Collective has worked with advocacy groups to highlight and improve the rights of sex workers and eliminate mistreatment.  Serious and systematic violence against sex workers is widespread throughout the world, perpetrated by police, the government and criminal gangs as well as clients.  Most sex workers are marginalised, criminalised and living in poverty which allows this mistreament to continue without fear of repercussion for the perpetrators.

The workshop was organised by The Kubatana Trust of Zimbabwe and The NGO Alliance Project whose aim is "to strengthen the use of email and internet strategies in Zimbabwean NGOs and civil society organisations" in bringing about positive democratic change. 10 Tactics was screened alongside the film 'Favela Rising'.

    Tactical Tech has been following the work of  W.TEC (Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre) in Lagos, Nigeria since they participated in 2009’s Info-Activism camp. W.TEC has continued to use 10 Tactics in their day-to-day work and training workshops. W.TEC’s mission is two-fold, training women and girls how to use ICTs (information and communication technology) for economic empowerment and equality but also to improve social awareness and advocacy.

    Last week 10 Tactics was used twice for NGO gatherings in Basque country. First the film was screened on October 7th to an audience of 20 at a public screening in Mondragon. Mondragon is the the town that began the the MONDRAGON Corporation, a federation of worker cooperatives based in the Basque region of Spain in the 1950s. It is now one of the richest cooperative networks in the world, providing employment for 85,000 people working in 256 companies.

    10 Tactics was screened in Erbil, Iraq as part of a 5-day course on strengthening relations between media and civil society organisations at an event hosted by Iraqi Al Amal Association in cooperation with Internews Europe. The event included 15 journalists, bloggers and NGO workers.

    CRID is a network of French NGOs working for International Solidarity. Its membership includes about 50 French organisations and their Southern and Eastern partner NGOs, creating an international network of 1500 partner organisations, 7500 local groups and 180,000 volunteers. Every second year, CRID organises a summer campus for NGO staff and volunteers, “L’Université d’été de la solidarité internationale”, which attracts more than 1000 participants.

    When Vijay Anand moved to the US from India to start his own software company, he realised how much more he could achieve when he didn't have to deal with corrupt officials.“It got me thinking about how citizens in India could fight the corruption that affects them every day.” In 2006 he founded the NGO 5th Pillar; the following year he returned to his home state of Tamil Nadu armed with a brilliant idea which he would use to launch 5th Pillar and to fight corruption: the Zero Rupee note.

    Every year around 20 000 of the most influential advocates, policy-makers and organisations working in the field of HIV/AIDS and committed to ending the pandemic gather for the International AIDS conference. This year's event took place in Vienna, Austria, between 18 - 23 July and was focused on maintaining HIV/AIDS as a key global, and human rights issue and pushing for the expansion of HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support.

    When Reshma failed to clear her Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exams despite many attempts, her father, an auto-driver, thought it fit to keep her at home. The only thing her father allowed her to do was to cut betel nuts and help her mother with embroidery work. The story of Haleema, daughter of another auto-driver, is no different. Being at home all day had left them feeling completely demoralised, depressed and shy.

    The Alternative Asean Network On Burma’s (ALTSEAN-Burma) 2010 election watch provides background information, analysis, and up-to-date information on the 2010 Burma elections in a concise, user-friendly format for activists, media, researchers, diplomats, legislators and policy-makers. The overall aim of the project is to “monitor whether the electoral process is conducted in a free and fair manner.”

    The Bell Bajao campaign was conceived by Mumbai-based NGO, Breakthrough, to mobilise men in India to take a stand against domestic violence. The campaign has been led by intensive mass media outreach: a series of public service announcements (PSAs) for Indian radio, television and print. “Bell Bajao” translates as “ring the bell” which is the message that informs the whole campaign: anyone can help stop domestic violence by being proactive and drawing attention to it. The PSAs all show examples of men and boys who have witnessed domestic violence within their communities and intervened.

    On 1 June 10 Tactics was shown as part of the Women of Uganda Network's (WOUGNET) 10 year anniversary celebrations in Kampala. This celebration also marked the 100th screening of 10 Tactics. The film was well received by the participants and a number of copies of 10 Tactics and other materials by Tactical Tech were distributed after the film.

    Undoubtedly, 10 Tactics has been screened in many interesting locations around the world, but its premiere in Cyprus on 27 May 2010 was quite unique. The screening took place at the Cyprus Community Media Centre (CCMC), situated right in the heart of the UN buffer zone dividing the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities and therefore accessible to all communities of Cyprus.

    This week Tactical Tech celebrates 100 worldwide screenings of 10 tactics for turning information into action. Tanya Notley, the 10 tactics project lead, reflects here on the success of this project.

    In the first month 10 tactics was launched, December 2009, interest about this film swelled and it was screened at 17 different events. 2010 has been no different and apart from the screenings, the film has been translated into 20 different languages.

    On April 5, 70 students and LGBT activists met for a screening of the film 10 tactics for turning information into action in Austin, Texas. They gathered at the auditorium of the College of Communication of the University of Texas. The audience was mostly composed of individuals interested in using technology to further social and economic change in their community. Following the screening, the audience engaged in a discussion of the main themes portrayed in the film.

    On April 17 "10 tactics" was screened in Nepal as part of the Nepalese Youth Climate Summit (NYCA 2010), which was held for four days between 16-19 April in Sauraha, Chitwan. More than 50 participants attended the screening, which was followed by two workshops on 'building climate campaigns' led by Prashanta Khanal and 'using media for communicating climate change issues' led by Ramesh Bhusal.

    Consumer Education Society (CES) held three screenings of '10 tactics' in February and March: two in the Latur District and a further screening in Guntur, India.

    Latur District, Maharashtra state, India, saw two screenings of 10 tactics; the first being in Udgir on 2 February and the second one in Loni the following day. These screenings were organised by CES and shown as part of teacher training programmes. Around 100 teacher trainees and NGO representatives participated in these events and were said to have found the film to be highly informative and inspiring.

    On Wednesday March 31 Internews Europe hosted a screening of '10 tactics for turning information into action' at the Comptoir Général on the banks of the Canal Saint-Martin.

    Around 100 people attended the screening and the subsequent panel discussion from various professional backgrounds including academics, journalists, individuals from the media and the commercial corporate sector and those from associations and NGOs.

    Wanting to raise public interest around the funding crisis for health in Sub-Saharan Africa and extend their support base to a young audience who would mobilise around this issue, ARASA turned to creative campaign tactics. Inspired by the correlation between excessive government spending on personal luxuries, like birthday parties and flash cars, and the “bling culture” of hip-hop and rap artists, ARASA created a mock music video, “Lords of the Bling”.

    On 25 March, 15 members of the Geneva Web Group, representing 12 organisations and agencies, met at the Secretariat of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Switzerland for a screening and discussion of the “10 Tactics” film. The “Geneva Web Group” is an informal forum where UN Agencies, NGOs, International Organizations and other web professionals get together to discuss and share problems and solutions that matter to web professionals.

    Egypt's first 10 tactics screening in Egypt was organised by Samia Helmi El-Yamani – ('Hayat'), a project manager from the Egyptian New Woman Foundation which advocates women's rights. Hayat was a participant at Tactical Tech's 2009 info-activism camp. She says her experience at this “amazing camp” was the impetus to screen the film since it allowed her to share the knowledge and experience she gained with others working to promote human rights in Egypt.

    A few months ago we reported that a new record was set for “10 tactics” screenings: nine different events were scheduled over one week in North and South America, including seven events in Mexico.     The '10 tactics' screening in Cali, Colombia, drew an audience of 28 organisations of varying interests. These included women and children rights groups, health groups, LGBTI groups, indigenous peoples’ rights groups, a union group, judicial group and an animal protection group.     From the conflict zone in Chattisgarh to the urban slums in Bombay, advocates and campaigners gathered to learn about 10 tactics as part of their participation in the 'Maps for Making Change Workshop'in Ahmedabad, India, between 1-3 February 2010.

    The workshop, organised by the Centre for Internet Society (CIS) in collaboration with Tactical Tech, was the second workshop aimed at providing advocates with the mapping know-how to communicate their social struggles.

    New record for 10 tactics record this week: the film is being show at nine different events across North and South America and you can follow most of the action on Twitter. The week started with a screening in Xalapa, Mexico, on Monday 25th February, and will end with one in Mexico City on Monday, 1st March.     Yesterday, after Martyrs’ Square cleared out and before Valentines dates began, 10 activists and social media enthusiasts gathered at the Social Media Exchange (SMEX) offices in Badaro to watch '10 tactics for turning information into action' and discuss the potential of using digital and social media for positive social change in Lebanon.Jessica Dheere, from SMEX, led the discussion afterwards, questioning the audience about the video and how the featured tactics might be applied in Lebanon.

    On the 12th January, around 30 independent media advocates travelled from all over Sri Lanka to gather at a cooperative training centre, situated along the Mahaweli River, in the central hill region of Kandy. They arrived to attend a three day workshop entitled “Interactive Media Technologies”. The workshop sought to identify new ideas, approaches and tools that could be used to establish the first editorially independent community radio station in Sri Lanka.

    Development and advocacy activists in Bangladesh were amazed to see how powerful a small mobile phone can be when they watched the film '10 tactics for turning information into action' at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU), Bangladesh.

    They learned how bloggers in different countries used this miniature version of information technology to expose corruption, intimidation and rights violations and create awareness against such practices among the people at local and global levels.

    Action, information and freedom were the subjects up for discussion at the launch of '10 tactics' on 23 January in Porto, Portugal. The event took place at the Núcleo de Jornalismo Académico do Porto (NJAP), a non-profit which has been publishing Portugal’s oldest volunteer-led student newspaper, JUP, for 22 years. Sara Moreira, a computer engineer from Porto who organised the event for NJAP, says the '10 tactics' documentary allowed the audience to reflect on the power of information but also to learn about controversial and sensitive subjects often ignored in mainstream media.

    25 students attended a screening of '10 tactics' at the Center for Research on Philosophy and Social Sciences, Federal University, Rio de Janeiro. The screening was organised by Renzo Taddei, a Professor at the School of Communication. Unfortunately the 10 tactics copies, which were to be given away to guests at the event, were withheld by Brazilian customs. Tactical Tech are very pleased to hear that, despite this setback, Renzo found a way to distribute the film.

    Soon traditional Chinese will join the other eleven subtitle options already available for the 10 tactics documentary. New media masters student at the University of Amsterdam, Yufen Cadence Chen, is spending her winter vacation translating "10 tactics for turning information into action" because she believes that “it is a good film to share” and one she wants Chinese speakers to have access to. With a firm belief in environmental activism, borne out of her passion for organic urban farming and an academic focus on digital media, a film about info-activism resonates strongly for her.

    The first Portugal screening of “10 tactics for turning information into action" took place on the evening of the December 21 at the cultural cooperative, Crew Hassan, in Lisbon.     10 tactics was shown to a mixed group of social activists, students, NGO workers, and even a few virtual spectators, in Guwahati, India on the 12th December. The screening was held at the Foundation for Social Transformation (FST) and welcomed some special guests including the Chairperson of Northeast Network, Manisha Behal and Executive Director of FST, Ketaki Bardalai.

    From 7th to 12th November, 140 free and open source software (FOSS) advocates gathered in the Philippines for Asia Source 3. This was a six-day hands-on camp organised by UNDP’s International Open Source Network (UNDP-IOSN) in Silang, Cavite. The aim was to build Open Source IT skills through the sharing of knowledge and expertise.

    Long-time writer and activist, Melissa Gira Grant researched and wrote the content for the ten fold-out tactic cards which accompany the 10 tactics film. She first met Tactical Tech while she was consulting with the Open Society Institutes's Sexual Health and Rights Project in 2007. Two years later she attended the Info-Activism Camp in India.

    A team of volunteers has been busy translating 10 tactics for turning information into action into Arabic, Burmese, French, Georgian, Hindi, Indonesian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Thai. These languages will all be included as subtitle options on the 10 tactics DVD, to be released in early December.

    Togo has joined the list of countries to host a screening of 10 tactics for turning information into action in December. The Centre d'Information, de Formation, de Recherche et d'Assistance en Droit (CIFRAD) will be organising the screening in the capital of Lomè in collaboration with Association Togolaise des Utilisateurs de Logiciels Libres (ATULL) and Fédération des ONG du Togo (FONGTO).
