Togo has joined the list of countries to host a screening of 10 tactics for turning information into action in December. The Centre d'Information, de Formation, de Recherche et d'Assistance en Droit (CIFRAD) will be organising the screening in the capital of Lomè in collaboration with Association Togolaise des Utilisateurs de Logiciels Libres (ATULL) and Fédération des ONG du Togo (FONGTO).
Nahmsath Yabouri, who attended Tactical Tech's Africa Source 2 event in Uganda in 2006, is organising the screening for CIFRAD. He says that digital tools are starting to play an increasing role in grassroots change in Togo: “We are doing this screening because we feel it is important for local right activists to know that relatively accessible IT [Information Technology] tools exist, and can foster the great advocacy work they are doing on the ground.” Access to IT is growing in Togo and so “the screening appears as an opportunity for rights activists to take advantage of these trends,” says Nahmsath. He believes that the timing of the screening is crucial as advocates are looking to increase the impact of their rights campaigning in time for Togo's presidential elections in February next year.
The organisers of the screening expect an audience of about 150 local rights advocates, NGO delegates and members of FONGTO. The film will be screened with French subtitles. The date and venue are still to be confirmed; details will be released on this website.
