This space has been created to publish the latest information about 10 tactics for turning information into action, a project of Tactical Technology Collective.
Screened at over 150 events by NGOs, informal groups of activists, educators, bloggers and media organisations worldwide, this film is swiftly becoming an essential companion for active members of civil society worldwide.
'10 tactics’ explores the use of digital technology and social media platforms such as Google Earth, Twitter and Facebook on human rights advocacy in the developing world. The film presents ten strategies for turning information into action and features 25 grassroots stories of innovative rights activists around the world.
Stephanie Hankey, co-founder of Tactical Tech, describes the film's success: “There isn't really anything else like this, people read about activists using technology for social change in the media, perhaps they hear somebody talking about it at a conference or read a book or guide but it is completely unique to see all these different examples from across the world, in one place, told from the point of view of the activists who were directly involved.”
Hankey further explains that this project is not about showcasing what can be achieved only when activists have freedom of expression and ubiquitous internet access. “We believe that the film is extremely relevant to audiences working with varying access to resources and infrastructure. We worked carefully to ensure that the film (and the set of cards that accompany it) included diverse range of examples from different parts of the world and a range of tools and tactics that could be used in different environments” she says.
This work has evidently paid off in the universal appeal of the film. Not only has '10 tactics' been screened in 50 countries and translated into more than 20 languages by enthusiastic volunteers but, Tanya Notley, who led this project, says it is having an impact on the way rights advocates think about their work. She says: “What we are hearing back from people who have organised screenings is that the audiences are bringing discussion back to their local needs. They are talking about local rights issues, digital privacy and security issues and the need for new networks and projects to support info-activism within their local contexts.
